Obituary of Rev. Marlene Amonsen

Please share a memory of Rev. Marlene to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

February 20, 1932 - July 17, 2025

After a marriage of more than 63 years, I lost my love and partner, Marlene. She was my partner in business, secretary, guide, teacher, and protector. In her infinite love, she was always concerned about my and all her loved ones’ health and welfare. She was the sure and steady matriarch for our entire family, spreading an endless legacy of love, guidance, faith, and courage.

Marlene also leaves behind her children, Astrid Soto (John) and Alec Amonsen (Jennifer), along with numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even a great great granddaughter. And she is considered an adopted grandmother and angel to the Yim family and their descendants.

Marlene was the daughter of Victor and Luella Hunter, and the last remaining sibling of Isabelle Lake (Gerald), Etta Currey (Kenneth), Daniel Hunter (Pearl), Ralston Hunter (Björg), and Marilyn Belfry (Donald), all of whom predeceased her. Born in Bradford, Ontario, she was a long-time resident of Toronto, relocating to Port Severn late in life.

Ordained as a United Church of Canada minister after completing two master’s degrees at the University of Toronto, Marlene spent 10 years as minister of Parkdale United Church, then moved to Davenport Perth United Church, before officially retiring from ministry. Once in Port Severn, she became a very active member of Coldwater United Church. When not ministering to others, she enjoyed playing rummy with family and relaxing with a good crossword puzzle. She also loved traveling the world, visiting loved ones and places near and far, especially family and friends in Denmark and the United States.

Marlene passed away peacefully, surrounded by family from as far afield as Oklahoma. The family will forever miss Mom, Mor, Farmor, Mormor, Mormormor, Farmormor, and Aunt Marlene, and will welcome all who knew and loved her to attend her celebration of life at the Coldwater United Church, 14 Harriet Street, Coldwater, Ontario on Saturday September 6, 2025 at 3:00 p.m.  All those who wish to attend must RSVP to Coldwater Funeral Home at 705-686-3344 or by email at nixblue@aol.com by August 23, 2025 with your name and the number of people attending. Further details will be provided by the family following receipt of your RSVP.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her honour may be made to Coldwater United Church and can be made through the Funeral Home.
