In our family, on both Mom and Dad's side, so many never went by their first or real name and Uncle Bill was one of them. I think my Dad, Fred (1919-1988), who was one of Bill's older brothers, started calling him Bill when he was very young. Although I think he went by Allan formally, nobody called him Allan. My brother Fred's middle name is Allan after Uncle Bill. I don't know why they just didn't give Fred the middle of name of Bill. Anyway, the name Uncle Bill was perfectly suited.
Uncle Bill was a quiet man who had a great sense of humour and always made us laugh when he was around. He ran a front end loader in a sand pit as I recall. He played the guitar and had a soft, lovely singing voice. He had a dog named Blue. It was always fun when we saw Uncle Bill.
