I just saw Jaan's obituary. The Ratas family were our next door neighbours on Huron Street in Toronto. I grew up with Jaani and I knew his sisters, Mary and Ena. Even back then, during our childhood, Jaani was always a kind and considerate person. I remember us building things in the basement using his father's tools and jigsaw, as well as playing in the sandbox outside the kitchen window. He also taught me some basic Estonian. I am so sorry that he is now gone. My sincerest condolences to his family. Zenon "Zeni-Lala" Fedorowycz

It's with a broken heart, that I send condolences to all Jaani's family. Jaan was a dear friend of my family. Jaan was such a sweet, helpful, young man when I first got to know him. Always laughing and making people laugh with him. He was a very close friend to my father ( Jim Weaver) and was with us often. He was extremely willing to help out with whatever was being done! A great neighbor, friend and confidant. I'm sure that anyone on TransCanada bay, would see Jaan travel to and from our place for years. Between my mom and I, I am sure he ate at our table a thousand times! As a girl I remember watching him speeding around in his white Cutter boat , with the huge roaster tail! Oh I miss going to bed on Friday or Saturday night and hearing the boats flying around the lake ! Ya, I get it! times have changed! But nothing beats that sound! Sure you hear it still, but it's just not the same! I grew up a few years too late, missed out on days of floatilla partying on regatta day, picnic island parties and all that terrible business! Guessing it's just as well. Look where it got Jaan? Alcohol is such a nasty drug. I wish for everyone's sake that things had ended differently. That he'd lived the promising, ambitious life, he'd set out to have! Jaan, your warm smile, your laugh and your teddy bear presence will forever be missed. Sitting at my kitchen table, my view shall be blurred for a long long time. Six mile will never be the same, my friend. RIP with my parents and yours. Always, your little sweet heart, Annie

In honour of Jaan’s deep love of animals, we have made a contribution to the Toronto Wildlife Centre in his name so that animals he enjoyed so much in life will be cared for.
Thinking of you all as you celebrate Jaan’s life.

Jaan must have been about 6 or 7 when he first came by our place, as the first Ratas I met - and then many times thereafter through to the past few years.
One memorable meeting was when at about 14 years of age he and Kari Oksanen caught our attention with firercrackers one night when we were staying for a snowmobile outing.
There are many other memorable events with Jaan and he knew Six Mile in regard to everything that was happening through the years.
My he rest in peace.

Sad to hear of Jaany’s passing. We have been his next door neighbour at the Lake for over 30 years and have become close friends. His cottage was one that when you went to visit you just walked in. No need to knock. He always welcomed you and made you feel right at home. Jaany was a wealth of knowledge for advice on how to handle any issue around the cottage or Lake that might come up, Our whole family will miss him. Art & Lois Parnell and family
