John and I were both young constables and walked the beat to-gether in Old Court St. station. I was saddened to read of his passing on June 3rd. I wish to relay my sincere condolences to his family. John was a special kind of person. He was the ideal type to be a Peace Officer. He was calm, strong, polite, cheerful and considerate of everyone both the public and the police. There is no officer that I know of who didn't like John. I'm sure his family know these things and will be greatly saddened by his death; Please know that you have every right to be very proud of him.

To our good friend, step-father, step-father-in-law, We are flooded with good memories of the countless visits to Kirkland Lake, New Years Eves and Christmas', vacation in Newfoundland, house boating in Temogami, and sitting on the dock at Lake Buckhorn. Add to that the hundreds of times at our house or yours sitting and discussing the positive side of life that you so insisted on. We love you John. we miss you already, we know we will miss you more as time marches on. We hold a dear place in our hearts for the kind of friend you were, the "step in" grandfather you were to our girls, and for the kind of husband and companion you were to Isobel. "Tight sails and steady winds." Al and Joyce

I had the privilege of knowing John as a fellow Toronto Police Marine Unit officer for several years until his retirement. He was a skilled mariner, a man of great humour and integrity, and a true gentleman.

John will be greatly missed by all his Canadian Naval Air Group mates but his legacy lives on in the Shearwater Aviation Museum where the Swordfish Aircraft he helped to restore is on display to remind the public that Canada once had a Naval Air Branch. Well done John, rest in peace.

I'd like to offer my heart felt condolences to John's family and friends. He was one of the finest persons I ever worked with. John never looked down or give a hard time to anyone that was less experienced than he. Always ready to give a helping hand. On top of all he had a great sense of humour. A gentle gentleman and I will always have fond memories of John. Noel [Lewie] Lewis-Watts X-442

Isabel and the Gourlie family - I am so sorry for your loss. John was a lovely man and I fondly remember him as a wonderful father-in-law. As can happen in divorce, families drift apart. However, I remember how happy John was to meet Isabel and how happy she made him. I will always remember him as a kind-hearted and gentle man with a wonderful sense of humour. Lynda

On behalf of the entire retired Naval Air Community and all CNAG members in particular it has been a distinct privelage to have known John as a friend and mentor. We all have such wonderful meomries of our time reatoring the Swordfish Aircraft in Toronto and its presntation to the Shearwater Aviation Museum after it flew in 1994. A true "Mate" has left us. RIP Big John.
